Area 51¶
Peania, Greece
Area 51 Artisan Coffee Roasters is a Greek specialty roastery based in Peania, on the eastern edge of Athens, founded in 2016 and part of the Kafea Terra group. The name is a nod to the Nevada site: they frame their roastery as a "confidential" research-and-experiment facility for coffee.
The house identity is science-forward — "Science & Research" runs across the branding. They describe research as part of daily practice: rather than take a trend or technique for granted, they run their own experiments on brewing parameters and record the outcomes to understand the rules first-hand. Quality evaluation, roasting and cup tasting are all handled in-house, and the range spans both espresso and filter, built on single origins sourced across the growing world (Brazil, Ethiopia, Colombia, Costa Rica among them).
Alongside roasting they run coffee education, R&D and quality-control services and sell barista gear, and have shown at World of Coffee and the London Coffee Festival. The bags carry a clean origin sticker — region, farm/station, cultivar, elevation, process and a cup profile — reflecting that spec-sheet, lab-notebook sensibility.
